What people ask us first
No. Once the connection has formed, usually within two to three weeks, the magnets pass through your digestive system, typically around six weeks after surgery and sometimes longer. Most people do not notice. We confirm it with an X-ray.
The connection in the intestine is made without any cutting, stapling or stitching of the bowel. The operation itself is keyhole surgery, so you will have a few small incisions on your tummy. If a gastric sleeve is part of your plan, that part uses standard surgical staples on the stomach. Dr Loy will explain exactly what your procedure involves.
MagDI has been in clinical use since 2021 and is authorised in the United States, Canada and Europe. In the published studies, the magnets connected successfully in every patient and no leak occurred at the magnetic connection. As with any surgery there are risks, including bleeding, infection, hernia and, rarely, the need for a further procedure. Dr Loy will go through the risks with you in full.
For many patients, yes: you swallow the first magnet with water on the morning of surgery and it travels into the small intestine on its own. If that is not suitable, Dr Loy places it with a thin scope while you are asleep. Either way you will not feel it.
Results vary from person to person, with the approach chosen and with how someone engages with the programme. In the first published series, patients having MagDI with a gastric sleeve lost around a third of their total body weight in the first year. Dr Loy will give you a realistic picture for your circumstances.
